VIDEO: WARREN HUFFMAN HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY

Dr. Warren J. Huffman is being honored posthumously with induction into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bridgewater in 1937 and was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball during his career as an Eagle.

Warren excelled in baseball and is one of the college's all-time best outfielders. He was selected to the All-Chesapeake Conference team four straight years as an outfielder. During his Bridgewater career, he batted .408, .387, .412, and .343 and was team captain his final two campaigns. Warren was an offensive/defensive lineman in football and was team captain his final season, when he moved from guard to end. He would go on to win All-Conference honors his senior year. He played one season of basketball, his senior year, -- the only year he made the cut, and he led the team in scoring. After graduation, he played for the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox minor league teams in the old Valley League. In 1939, he was runner-up in the National Professional Baseball Minor League batting race with a .415 average. He represented Virginia that season in the Centennial Minor League All-Star Game in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Warren earned his masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Illinois, where he was a professor of health and safety education from 1942-73. He then joined the staff of the University of Tennessee and served as a professor of health and safety education until retiring in 1982. In 1967, he was a delegate to the World Conference on Smoking and Health in New York City. In 1981, he was awarded a Presidential Citation from the American School and Community Association, and was voted a Distinguished Service to Safety Award from the National Safety Council. He was a past president of the Bridgewater Ripples Society and served on the Alumni Board of Directors.

Although Warren passed away in 1995, his legacy as an athlete at Bridgewater and his work in American safety education make him an outstanding choice for the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
