Dr. Kinder arrived at Bridgewater College in 1978 and served asthe Director of Athletics and Chairman of the Physical EducationDepartment until 2000. In 2000, Tom gave up the role of Director ofAthletics, but continued as department chair until his death in2001.
During his collegiate years, Tom played basketball and baseballat Morris Harvey College. Twice, he led the basketball team to theNAIA national tournament, and twice, he earned all-conferencebaseball acclaim. After receiving his Bachelor's degree at MorrisHarvey, Tom earned his Master's degree at Marshall University andhis Doctor of Education degree at Vanderbilt University.
Tom began his teaching and coaching career at Herbert HooverHigh School in Charleston, W.Va. where he coached basketball. In1965, Tom began his collegiate teaching and coaching at MorrisHarvey College. He moved to Armstrong State College in 1970 wherehe was head baseball coach, assistant basketball coach, andassociate athletics director.
In 1978, he began his tenure at Bridgewater where, in additionto his administrative duties, he served as the team's baseballcoach from 1978-1985. His baseball teams posted a 98-77-2 record,and his 1985 squad won the ODAC title with an 18-11 mark, earningTom conference Coach of the Year honors.
During his years as Director of Athletics, Tom served onnumerous NCAA committees, and in 1999, the National Association ofCollege Directors of Athletics honored him with the SoutheastRegion Athletics Director of the Year Award.
Tom was inducted into the Matewan High School Hall of Fame, andin 1999, he was inducted into the University of CharlestonAthletics Hall of Fame (formerly Morris Harvey College).
Tom was also involved in many civic activities and churchactivities. He was Chair of the Deacon Board at Bridgewater Churchof the Brethren and served on the Bridgewater Town Council.
For his distinguished service to Bridgewater College as anadministrator and professor, Tom Kinder merits induction into theBridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
