John Curry orchestrated the Bridgewater College offense for the men’s basketball team for three seasons after transferring from Newberry College.
Curry was Bill Leatherman’s first recruit upon taking the job in the summer of 1985. He started 16 games his sophomore year, a season riddled with season long injuries. In his junior year, Curry led the ODAC with 195 assists while helping the squad complete one of the biggest turnarounds in the country by winning Bridgewater’s first ODAC regular season title. In his senior year, Curry helped lead the Eagles to its best ODAC season in school history. That season, the Eagles won the ODAC regular season title along with its only ODAC Tournament Championship. Curry finished his senior campaign with an ODAC record 282 assists, a record he still holds more than 30 years later. The team finished the season with a 24-5 record, played in the school’s first NCAA Division III National Tournament and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation.
Curry still holds Bridgewater records for assists in a career with 557, assists in a season with 282, and assists in a game with 17. He ranks No.3 all-time in ODAC career assist while playing only three seasons with the Eagles.
Since graduating from Bridgewater, Curry has been involved in numerous youth and civic activities. He was involved with his children’s teams coaching many basketball and baseball teams. Curry especially remembers returning to BC for three summers with his boys to volunteer as a counselor for Coach Leatherman at his All-Star Basketball Camp. Curry and his wife Wendy are founding members of the G. Cecil Pruett YMCA in Canton, GA.
Curry’s business career has taken the family as far north as New Haven, Conn. and as far south as Pensacola, Fla. and just about every state in between. The family now resides in Jasper, Georgia. The Curry’s are members of Pleasant Hill Christian Church.
In recognition of his stellar basketball career, John Curry is worthy of induction into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
