Barbara Jean Purkey was one of the top female athletes of her era during her years at Bridgewater College. While at Bridgewater, Barbara lettered in basketball, field hockey and tennis.

During her four seasons, the basketball team compiled a 47-9 record for a .830 winning percentage. However, it was field hockey where Barbara received state, regional and national recognition. The team compiled a 23-10-5 record during her career. All four years, she was selected to the Blue Ridge Field Hockey team and the Southeast Team. She was selected to play in the national tournament three times during her four-year career.

Following her graduation, Barbara taught at John C. Myers Middle School in Broadway. She was a member of Bridgewater's Physical Education Department from 1968-1970 and was Bridgewater's head women's lacrosse coach in 1970. For the past 27 years, Barbara has been employed at The Park School in Baltimore, Md., where she serves as the athletic director. She also coaches field hockey and lacrosse and teaches physical education.

Her outstanding accomplishments in athletics while a student at Bridgewater and her dedication to the education of young people warrant Barbara's election to the Bridgewater Athletic Hall of Fame.
