VIDEO: HELEN WINE SHICKEL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY
Helen Wine Shickel was regarded as one of Bridgewater College's top athletes during her career as an Eagle. Helen participated in three sports while at Bridgewater and in 1953 she was named as one of the college's outstanding athletes.
Helen played four seasons with the Eagles' basketball team. During her first three seasons, she led the team in scoring and her junior season, the team finished with a solid 7-2 record. As a senior, she was once again one of the team's top offensive threats and helped lead the team to an impressive 8-1 record.
Helen also played field hockey for three seasons, and tennis for two years. The tennis program began during her junior year, and the team racked up 12 straight victories during her two years on the team. Helen played at the No. 1 singles slot for both seasons.
She was also very active in other activities while at Bridgewater College. In 1952-1953, Helen was the president of the Women's Athletic Association and vice-president of the student body. She was a member of the Honor Council and was elected to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
From 1953-1960, Helen worked as the secretary to the Dean and Registrar at Bridgewater College. In 1956, Helen and her husband, Carlton (Class of '46), purchased Shickel Machine Shop, Inc. She served the company in many roles, and following her husband's death in 1994, she became president of Shickel Corp. She has also been very active in church activities, serving her church in many capacities.
In recognition of her success as a student-athlete while at Bridgewater College, Helen Wine Shickel is deserving of induction into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
