Andrew Hence was a four-year member of the Bridgewater College baseball program and is still recognized as one of the top pitchers in the College’s history.

Hence was named the Eagles’ Outstanding Pitcher in both 1974 and 1975 and was named to the All-VCAA first-team in each of those seasons. Hence ranked among the nation’s leaders in earned run average in 1974 when he posted a 4-1 record with a 1.71 ERA for the Eagles. As a senior, Hence was a team captain and posted a 1.63 earned run average along with a .500 batting average. Hence still owns the BC career record for shutouts with six.

Following graduation, Hence embarked on a career in teaching and coaching in the state of Virginia. His first stop was at Essex High School where he led the girls’ softball team to the district, regional and state titles. Hence coached girls’ basketball at Middlesex from 1981-98 where he accumulated 283 wins and was named district coach of the year in 1990. He also coached baseball at Middlesex from 1982-92 and boys’ basketball from 1990-92. He was named Northern Neck District Coach of the Year in boys’ basketball in 1996 and 1997. Hence then moved on to Massaponax where he coached boys’ basketball from 1998-2003. From there he went to Riverbend High School where he coached golf until stepping down following the 2011 season. He was named the area Golf Coach of the Year in 2006.

Hence is also an active member in his church as well as holding membership in several teaching and coaching organizations.

In recognition of his outstanding play on the baseball diamond and his outstanding performance as an educator and coach, Andrew Hence is deserving of induction into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
