Fred Pence was a superior athlete during his time at Bridgewater College. Fred earned nine varsity letters while playing three sports for the Eagles.

Fred played basketball, football and track and served as a team captain in all three sports during the 1954-55 season. In football, Fred was named to the All-State Little Six team following the 1953 season. In 1953, he caught a touchdown pass from his brother Larry, a 1997 BC Hall of Fame inductee, for BC's lone score in a 6-0 victory over Newport News Apprentice. Fred also excelled in track where he set a school record in the discus.

Fred graduated cum laude with degrees in Mathematics and Physical Education and a minor in Biology. Following graduation, he entered the Armed Forces where he continued his participation in athletics. Subsequently, Fred began a career in education, coaching football and basketball at Montevideo High School. He was the first football coach to achieve a winning record at the school. His career football coaching record was 42-31-3.

In 1963, Fred received Madison College's first Master of Science in Mathematics degree. He was selected Teacher of the Year at Montevideo High School in 1975 and 1978 and at Spotswood High School in 1995. In 1983, he was named the State Mathematics Teacher of the Year.

Fred has been an active member in his church and community for many years. Fred was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Order of the Arrow  -  the highest award possible in the scouting fraternity.

For his outstanding efforts on the playing field at Bridgewater and his work as an educator and coach, Fred Pence merits induction into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
