Donnie Dofflemyer made his mark in the sport of football, first as an outstanding back for Bridgewater College and later as one of the most successful high school coaches in the Shenandoah Valley.
Donnie played on the Bridgewater football team from 1954-57 as an offensive and defensive back and was instrumental in the majority of the Eagles' victories during that period. He earned honorable mention All-State honors as a junior in 1956 and also was chosen to the Virginia Little Eight all-star team after his senior campaign. A co-captain of the 1957 Bridgewater unit, Donnie led the Eagles to a 51-0 victory over Gallaudet College in his final collegiate game by rushing for 211 yards and four touchdowns on only 12 carries. He also made an impact as an outstanding kicker and punter and set a school record with a 53-yard punt over the course of his Bridgewater career. An outstanding all-around athlete, Donnie also competed on the 1957 Bridgewater baseball team as an infielder and spent five consecutive summers playing in the Valley League after graduating from Elkton High School in 1954.
Upon receiving his bachelor's degree, Donnie embarked on a 34-year career as a high school teacher, including 24 seasons as a football coach, before his retirement in 1991. He began at King George High School in 1958 as a teacher and head football coach before moving on to Page County High School in 1960, where he guided the school to a runner-up finish in the district championship in his first season. After six years at Page County, Donnie moved to Montevideo High School in Penn Laird, where he would achieve his greatest successes as a football coach. In 14 seasons, Donnie's Montevideo teams won four district titles (1967, '69, '77, and '79) as well the 1977 regional championship. Donnie was named the 1977 Skyline District Coach of the Year after taking Montevideo to the state championship game, an honor he would receive again in 1979. That same season, Montevideo High re-named its stadium "Donnie Dofflemyer Field" in recognition of his superb achievements. He retired from coaching in 1982 while at Spotswood High School with a career record of 139-95-5.
After his teaching retirement, Donnie developed a passion for flying single-and multi-engine airplanes and has been an instructor at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport since 1991. He also is an active member of the Presbyterian church and was ordained a deacon in 1979.
