Duane Harrison ranks as one of the best pure athletes to ever compete for Bridgewater College, and he did so with a championship resolve from 1977-81. He was a four-year letterman in football, indoor track, outdoor track and for one season in basketball. Having graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree, he raised athletics to a new level at Bridgewater.

Duane became the College's first Track & Field All-American, winning national honors in the NCAA outdoor long jump in both 1980 and '81. A superb track and field athlete, he paced the Eagle men's team to ODAC indoor championships in 1979, '80 and '81 and the men's team to ODAC outdoor championships all four years from 1978-81. He was voted the ODAC Trackman of the Year in the indoor and outdoor seasons in both 1979 and '81. During his illustrious career, he won 11 ODAC indoor titles and 13 outdoor titles. He holds the Bridgewater record in the long jump with a leap of 24'-4".

An equally-talented football player as well, Duane was the team's quarterback and punter. He guided the team to its first-ever ODAC title in 1980, while setting the school record for victories. He was selected first team All-ODAC as a quarterback and punter in both the 1979 and '80 seasons. Duane led Division III in punting in 1979 with a 41.9 yards per kick average.

After graduation, Duane was a teacher and coach at Culpeper High School, before moving on to become a senior operations manager for Federal Express. He has been a president of the Chancellor, Va., Lions Club and a member of the Fredericksburg, Va., Salvation Army Board of Directors. He has also been an active member in coaching and instructing Little League sports.

Duane Harrison set the standard of All-American excellence for a Bridgewater College Athlete and is a model inductee into the Bridgewater College Athletic Hall of Fame.
