Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Chris Martel scored seven goals and Connor McLean tied a team record with seven assists as the Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-10 victory against Guilford in ODAC play at the Jopson Athletic Complex.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 19, Guilford 10
  • Records: Bridgewater 8-5, 3-3 ODAC; Guilford 4-6, 2-3 ODAC

How It Happened

  • Guilford started off hot as the visitors tallied the first three scores of the game to take a quick 3-0 advantage halfway through the first quarter.
  • Lucas Johnson got the Eagles on the board off an assist from Hunter Becker at the 4:47 mark followed by a goal from Korey Polo with a helper to McLean to cut the deficit to 3-2 heading into the second period.
  • Bridgewater dominated the second quarter as it outscored Guilford by a 7-1 margin. Grant Nyland started off the frenzy just 50 seconds in with a goal to knot the game at 3-3.
  • Martel and Polo alternated as scorers before Sam Homick used an assist from McLean to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead. Martel picked up his third goal of the quarter and Trevor McClelland also found the back of the net before the end of the half as the Eagles went ahead 9-4 at the break.
  • McLean netted a man-up goal to start the scoring in the second half before McClelland and Martel each scored just 15 seconds apart to extend the lead to 12-4.
  • The Quakers were able to stop the three-goal scoring run to drop the deficit to 12-5, but BC responded with three more goals, including man-down and man-up scores from Martel and Polo's third goal of the game.
  • Each side tallied four goals in the fourth quarter as the Eagles walked off home turf with a 19-10 win.

Match Notes

  • Martel finished with seven goals, which is his third game with seven scores this season. He becomes the third player in team history to reach the 50 goal plateau in a single season. Martel is second in team history with 53 goals this season and is primed to set the program's single-season goal record (Eric Husselbaugh, 54, 2019).
  • McLean registered a nine-point outing consisting of two goals and seven assists. He now stands with 31 assists on the season, which ranks second in program history for a season (Eric Husselbaugh, 34, 2019) and puts him second on the career assist list with 68 helpers in his four-year career (Eric Husseslbaugh, 81, 2018-21). In addition, his seven assists ties his own team record for most assists in a single game after he previously recorded seven helpers on April 21, 2021.
  • Polo finished with three goals, while McClelland and Nyland each ended the day with two scores. Johnson, Homick and Jim Davis rounded out the scorers for the Eagles.
  • Becker finished with three assists, while Trent Cheyney had one.
  • Gabriel Alexander went 15-for-20 at the faceoff X and led the game with 13 ground balls to push him across the 100 ground ball mark for the season. This is the third time and Alexander is just the second player in program history to reach the mark in a season (Mason Gauntt, 114, 2019; Mason Gauntt, 102, 2018). Alexander, the far and away leader in the stat in the ODAC this season, now has 104 for the year.
  • In addition, Martel grabbed six ground balls of his own, while Samuel Sharps picked up five, Cheyney tallied four ground balls and Eddis Ross IV, McClelland and McLean all had three ground balls apiece.
  • Robbie Noyes stopped nine shots in over 50 minutes in the cage before giving way to Tyler Carney who finished the game and made three saves in under 10 minutes of action.
  • As a team, the Eagles held a 58-35 edge in ground balls and a 51-40 edge in shots.

Up Next

  • The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 13, for an ODAC contest against Randolph at the Jopson Athletic Complex under the lights at 7 pm.
