Box Score
BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater scored 17 runs on 16 base hits Thursday to defeat Mary Washington, 17-4, in a non-conference game shortened to eight innings due to darkness.
Bridgewater outfielder Kenner Berry continued to produce at the plate, finishing the game 3-for-3 with a pair of two-run homers and two walks. Berry increased his batting average to .452 and his on-base percentage to .500 on the season. He now has seven homers and 41 RBIs. He leads the ODAC in both batting average and runs batted in.
Chris King was 2-for-2 with three RBIs for his third multi-hit game in a row. King has hit safely in nine consecutive games and is batting .474 (18-for-38) during that stretch.
Dylan Horne also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Horne is 6-for-9 in two games this week.
Both coaches decided to "staff" the game on the mound with a total of 14 pitchers seeing action. Bridgewater used eight pitchers on the day and they combined to allow just three earned runs in eight innings. Starting pitcher Jordan Showalter, Ian Mayes, Ryan Mason and Brady Cockerham each pitched one scoreless inning.
Bridgewater scored four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Austin Batten led off the game with a single and stole second. Batten moved to third on Ryan Leake's groundout and scored on King's sacrifice fly to put the Eagles on the board. Berry walked and then he and Leake pulled off a double steal to move to second and third with just one out. Brendan Howell followed with a grounder to first and first baseman Stephen Johnston elected to throw home in an attempt to retire Leake. The throw skipped past the catcher as Leake scored with Berry stopping at third and Howell advancing to second on the play. Justin Petock followed with a double to right, scoring Berry and Howell, to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
Following a 35-minute storm delay, Mary Washington cut the deficit in half on Johnston's two-run double in the top of the third, but Berry launched a two-run homer deep to leftcenter in the bottom half of the inning to push the lead back to four runs at 6-2.
Bridgewater broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with eight runs on seven hits. Josh Lasam walked to lead off the inning and Horne bunted for a base hit. Both runners moved up on Cavin Clyde's sacrifice bunt. Leake walked to load the sacks and King followed with a two-run single for an 8-2 Eagles' lead. Berry walked to reload the bases and Howell added a run-scoring single to make it 9-2. After Petock struck out, Damian Reed hit a hard grounder down the first-base line. Johnston made a diving attempt to field the grounder, but the ball bounced off his glove and two more runs scored to push the lead to 11-2. Lasam singled home another run and Horne capped the inning with a two-run single, giving the Eagles a 14-2 advantage.
The Eagles added two more in the fifth when King led off with a single and Berry followed with his second homer of the game, increasing the lead to 16-2.
Johnston delivered his second, two-run double of the game in the seventh for Mary Washington's final runs, making the score 16-4. In the bottom of the seventh pinch-hitter Parker Mead slashed a double to right, scoring Howell with the game's final run in Bridgewater's 17-4 victory.
The Eagles, now 19-12 overall, travel to Hampden-Sydney on Saturday for a key conference doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
