Eagles, Quakers Split Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles split a conference doubleheader Saturday with Guilford College, winning the first game 6-4 and dropping the second game by the same 6-4 score.

In the opener, the Eagles pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 4-4 tie and take the 6-4 victory.

Bridgewater (17-12, 8-5 in the ODAC) jumped on top early with a run in the bottom of the first. Austin Batten led off with a bunt single and moved to third on a single by Cavin Clyde. After Ryan Leake flied out for the first out of the inning, Clyde attempted to steal second, but was caught in a rundown and tagged out. Batten raced home on the play to put the Eagles on the board.

Guilford (14-15, 4-9 in the ODAC) responded in the top of the second to take the lead. Chuck Noble and Logan Jones both singled and both scored on a double by Grayson Tuttle to put Guilford on top 2-1.

Bridgewater added a run in the bottom half of the second inning to tie the score. With two outs, Brandon Poole walked and Hunter Hensley followed with a triple down the left-field line, scoring Poole to make the score 2-2.

The Eagles regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. With one out, Garrison Wright singled and Poole walked. After Hensley was retired on a fly ball, Batten walked to load the bases. Clyde then singled up the middle to chase home two runs, giving Bridgewater a 4-2 lead.

The Quakers tacked on an unearned run in the fourth on Josh Shepherd's run-scoring single, cutting the deficit to 4-3 and then scratched out another run in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Rocco Wilcox led off the seventh with a walk and Brett Shapcott was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. With one out, Shepherd singled through the left side to load the bases. Wilcox scored on a Joe Metts' groundout to second, tying the score at 4-4.

Bridgewater answered with the go-ahead runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning. With one out, Leake walked and stole second. After Kenner Berry walked, Brendan Howell scored Leake with a single to right-center for a 5-4 Eagles lead. Berry then trotted home on a single to left by Chris King, making the score 6-4.

Steven Woerner came out of the bullpen and pitched five strong innings to earn the victory. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out five and walking one.

Clyde was 2-for-5 with two RBIs to pace the Eagles' 11-hit attack. Berry was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Hensley was 2-for-4 with one run batted in.

Bridgewater led 4-0 after six innings in the second game, but the Eagles were unable to hold off the Quakers down the stretch.

The Eagles again scored early, putting two runs on the board in the first. With one out, Clyde walked and stole second. King followed with a single to right, putting runners on the corners. King then stole second to move into scoring position. Berry hit a chopper to third and the third baseman threw home to stop Clyde from scoring. Clyde hustled back to third safely and the Eagles had the bases loaded, still with just one out. Justin Petock walked to force in a run and King scored on a groundout by Howell to put the Eagles on top 2-0.

Bridgewater added two more runs in the fourth to lead 4-0. Batten led off with a double into the right-field corner and scored on a single by Clyde, making the score 3-0. With Clyde on second and one out, Berry singled up the middle, scoring Clyde to give the Eagles a four-run lead.

Bridgewater freshman righthander Tristan Daywalt blanked the Quakers for six innings, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Austin Wilson doubled to get the inning started. Dylan Callahan, another pinch-hitter, then hit a ground ball to first. Wilson beat the throw to third and Quakers had runners on the corners with no outs. Tuttle then doubled to the gap in left center, scoring both runners to cut the Eagles lead to 4-2. Shapcott followed by putting down a sacrifice bunt and was safe at first on a throwing error. Tuttle scored on the play to make the score 4-3.

Daywalt left after pitching seven strong innings. He allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits. He struck out 11 and walked two.

Guilford pushed across a run in the eighth to tie the score. Pinch-hitter A.J. Girting led off with a single off reliever Jordan Showalter and Chase Mitchell, pinch-hitting for the DH Andrew Brann, hit a bloop single to left. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Wilson. Kyle Jones then came out of the bullpen and struck out Callahan for the second out of the inning.

The tying run scored on a peculiar balk call. Jones started his pitching motion and abruptly stopped.  Bridgewater head coach Curt Kendall had asked for time as he wanted to make a pitching change. Time was called, but after a lengthy discussion, the umpires ruled a balk had occurred, allowing the tying run to score.

Bridgewater had a chance to regain the lead in the bottom of the eighth but stranded a runner at third. With one out, Damian Reed doubled and stole third. Guilford starter Eric Yost retired the next two batters on a grounder to first and a strikeout to keep the score tied.

The Quakers took the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Shapcott led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Wilcox. Shapcott scored on Shepherd's groundout to second, giving Guilford a 5-4 lead. Wilcox, who moved to second on Shepherd's grounder, swiped third and scored on a single by Girting, making the score 6-4.

Bridgewater threatened in the bottom of the ninth when the Eagles put the potential tying runs on base. With two outs and no one on, King and Berry reached base with singles. Yost, however, finished his complete-game effort by retiring Petock on a grounder to short as the Quakers salvaged the split with the 6-4 victory.

King led Bridgewater's 12-hit attack in the second game with three hits while Berry and Reed added two hits each.

Bridgewater returns to action Tuesday when the Eagles travel to Harrisonburg to play Eastern Mennonite. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
