Men's Soccer Takes Down Randolph in ODAC Opener

Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team took a 3-2 victory over Randolph Saturday night. This was the first win for the Eagles in conference play this season.

Records: Bridgewater (8-1-2, 1-0 ODAC), Randolph (2-5-3, 0-1 ODAC)

How it Happened
  • In the opening minute, Cole Dunbar ripped the first shot attempt of the match. It was blocked by a Randolph defender. In the following minutes, BC controlled the ball in Randolph's defensive half. At the 12:39 mark, Dunbar took a throw in opportunity into the box, finding Trey Widrick for the first goal of the match.
  • The Eagles kept their foot on the gas pedal, scoring nearly a minute later. Anthony Medrano took a corner kick opportunity and found Widrick in the box for his second goal of the match.
  • The Wildcats finally got on the board at the 18:24 mark, when Marcus Cortes sent a shot low right, past BC keeper Davis Bashore.
  • The match stayed scoreless for the rest of the half, but Bridgewater had a few more shot opportunities in the waning minutes of the half. Ethan Locklear and Riley Queen had consecutive shot attempts in the 22nd minute, but both were stopped by the Wildcats' keeper. Randolph sent a shot on target, but to no avail. BC and Randolph had a shot apiece in the final minutes of the half, but both shots were off target.
  • Bridgewater applied the pressure early in the second half, operating in Randolph's defensive half. Jayden Buckles, Riley Queen, and Anthony Medrano each had shot attempts, but were unable to add to the tally.
  • In the 75th minute, Medrano found the foot of Widrick. Widrick found the back of the net, securing the first hat trick of the season.
  • In the 87th minute, Ian Sigmon scored a goal to put the Wildcats within striking distance. Bridgewater kept the ball in the Randolph end to secure their first win of the season in ODAC play.
Match Notes
  • Widrick scored the first hat trick of the season. With his three goals, he moves to the tenth most goals in program history, passing teammate Riley Queen.
  • This was the first victory in ODAC play for the Eagles.
  • The Eagles bounced back on the offensive end of things following their loss against Mary Washington. Bridgewater recorded 14 shots versus Randolph's 10, once again winning the shots battle.
  • Davis Bashore played all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Eagles and recorded three saves.

The Eagles travel to Greensboro to face the Quakers on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 PM. The match will be streamed on FloCollege.
