Field Hockey Contest Shortened to Weather

Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College and Stevenson University played to a 1-1 tie in a contest that was stopped at the end of regulation due to lightning in the area.

How It Happened
  • The defenses dominated in the first half as the teams combined for just four shots. Bridgewater held the edge in shots, 3-1, in the first two quarters.
  • The Eagles had a solid scoring opportunity midway through the first quarter, but Stevenson goalkeeper Jordan Vradenburgh made a diving stop on a shot by Bridgewater's Bekah Mercer.
  • Stevenson's lone shot of the first half came early in the second quarter when Shae Bennett was open straight away, but her shot was stopped by Bridgewater goalkeeper Ashley Nau.
  • Bridgewater took the lead just 2:07 into the second half when Mollie Best found the back of the cage
  • The Mustangs threatened minutes later, but Bridgewater goalkeeper Madalyn Miller denied Stevenson's Nicole Ziegler's shot from close range.
  • Bridgewater maintained the 1-0 lead until Stevenson's Lauren Tobin scored the tying goal with nine minutes left to play in the fourth quarter..
  • The score was tied at the end of regulation and before overtime started the contest was halted due to lightning in the area. After a wait of just more than one hour, the game was declared a tie.

  • Stevenson entered the contest ranked No. 10 in the country by fieldhockeycorner.com's Rating Percentage Index. The Mustangs were one of just 12 undefeated teams in the nation.
  • Stevenson held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners and a 6-4 advantage in total shots. 
  • Both teams put three shots on goal.
  • The goal by Bridgewater sophomore Mollie Best was her first of the season and the first of her career.
