FIeld Hockey's Historic Season Closes in ODAC Semifinals

Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team fell to No. 13 Lynchburg 3-0 on Thursday night in the ODAC Semifinals.

The Basics
Score: No. 13 Lynchburg 3, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 12-6-1, No. 13 Lynchburg 15-3

How It Happened
  • Bridgewater had the first true chance of the contest with a penalty corner six minutes in, but the Eagles did not register a shot. Lynchburg flipped the field and converted on their first chance as Grace Peterson found the back of the net off an assist from Maddie Schuchter to make it 1-0. The teams traded chances with the Eagles having a good look late in the opening frame off of a penalty corner, but Kylie Amberger had her shot blocked on its way to the cage.
  • BC had a good look in the opening seconds of the second quarter as Daphne Daymude put a rip on target that was turned away by Shay Schoones. Lynchburg had a pair of corner chances following the BC rush, but did not get a shot on target during the opportunities. Both sides traded control in the midfield through the rest of the period to send it to the half at a 1-0 Hornets' advantage.
  • Lynchburg had a penalty corner early in the third quarter and capitalized as an Olivia Muir shot bounced its way to the back of the net and made it 2-0. Lynchburg had a few good chances between some BC runs up the field, but a save by Madalyn Miller late in the quarter  kept the Eagles within striking distance.
  • The Hornets opened the fourth with a pair of penalty corners and capitalized on the second chance. Jill Pleiter found the back of the net on a bouncing shot to make it 3-0 for the Hornets with eight minutes to play. BC was able to make some runs towards the cage, but did not register a shot on the stat sheet.
Match Notes,
  • BC registered just two shots on the scoresheet, but that doesn't tell the full story. The Eagles had opportunities in the attacking third of the field, but the stingy Lynchburg defense was able to cause turnovers and control the midfield when it mattered.
  • Lynchburg held an 11-2 advantage in shots including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • Miller had a pair of saves for BC in the cage over the second half.

Bridgewater finishes the 2024 campaign with a tally of 12 wins, the most for the program under head coach Gina Stephan and the most for the Eagles since the 2015 ODAC Championship season. The four seniors have been a part of one of the quickest turnarounds in recent history as the squad won 12 games over their first two seasons compared 20 over the last two seasons.
