BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater college women's soccer team took down Mary Washington, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon. Sydney Davis recorded her 20th career shutout and tied the all-time shutout record.
Mary Washington kept Bridgewater on their heels in the first half, having multiple good chances and pressing the Eagles backline. The defense was stout all game, as defenders Maren Dougherty, Lindsey Winkels, Lexi Winkler, and Emily York were impressive in breaking up Mary Washington chances. The back-and-forth affair resulted in scoreless tie heading into the half.
BC held a 6-2 shot advantage, and corners were tied 1-1.
In the second half, Bridgewater began to pick up its pace on offense. In the 61st minute, Alicia Keo created a turnover in the midfield and dribbled straight down the center of the field. There she found Skyler Daum streaking down the right side; Daum crossed a pass into the box that found the head of Destiny Zapata for the BC goal.
The Eagles of Bridgewater put the game away in the 69th minute, when a free kick from Hanna Randolph found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
That was enough to keep Mary Washington down, as Davis recorded a shutout. Bridgewater held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks and outshot the opposition 17-5.
