Women's Soccer Falls to No. 13 Swarthmore

CLEVELAND, Oh. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 13 Swarthmore 4-2 Saturday night. 

The Basics 

Score: Bridgewater 2, Swarthmore 4 

Records: Bridgewater (15-6), Swarthmore (15-3-3) 

How It Happened 

  • The Eagles took control of possession early, creating back-to-back corner kick opportunities in the opening three minutes. On the second corner, Cassandra Villafan found Grace Minton in the box. Minton headed the ball past the Swarthmore keeper for the first goal of the match. 

  • Swarthmore quickly responded with a goal of their own. A foul committed by Minton near the BC goal in the 21st minute led to a Swarthmore scoring opportunity.  

  • Despite Swarthmore controlling possession for the remainder of the half, the Eagles managed to hold the score to 2-1, heading into halftime. 

  • In the second half, Swarthmore score a goal in the 51st minute, followed by another in the 53rd minute to take the lead. Swarthmore scored once more in the 70th minute on a set piece to make the score 4-2.  

Match Notes 

  • The Eagles scored their first NCAA tournament points in this contest. Coming into this match, the Eagles only went dancing once before, falling in the first round to Hope 1-0. 

  • Katherine King scored her 14th career goal, and her first since the 11-0 victory over Sweet Briar on Oct. 18.  

  • This was the second time this season that the Eagles allowed more than two goals, and the first time they did so in regulation. 

  • After picking up the assist on Katherine King's goal in the 16th minute, Lyric Birkley was credited with her 31st career assist (15th of the season), and 117th career point (39th of the season). Birkley extends her program records for career points, career assists, and single-season assists. Birkley finishes the season tied in second for single-season points. 

The loss caps a 15-6 season, tied for the second-most winningest season in program history. The Eagles made their second NCAA tournament appearance in program history and scored their first points in the big dance.
