BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team beat Southern Virginia, 7-0, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles had a strong first half against the Knights, producing 13 shots. The team created consistent pressure, using stretch passes and fast breaks to their advantage. Just under five minutes into the game, pressure created by David Franco led to a turnover by the Knights. The ball found its way to Alex Martinez' left foot, and he struck a hard shot to the top right corner of the net to make the score 1-0.
BC was able to muster up several more scoring chances in the first half, but the score remained 1-0 heading into the break. Shots were 13-5 in favor of Bridgewater.
In the second half, Bridgewater began to capitalize on its chances. Franco was able to find twine earning his first career goal in the 65th minute. The play began on a free kick from Parker Richard that found Franco in the box, he made a move to the net and scored. Just four minutes later in the 69th minute, he scored his second goal of the day on a perfect crossing pass from Trevon Phillips, making the score 3-0. The fourth goal went off a Knights defender and into the net.
Franco earned a hat trick scoring on a penalty kick to make it 5-0 in the 73rd minute beating the goalkeeper to the left side.
BC made it 6-0 game when Ian LaVallee dribbled down the right wing, making a move around the defender that left him open for a shot from the side of the net. The tough angled shot hit the goalkeeper, but he was unable to make the save and the ball went in the net.
The final goal of the day in the 89th minute made it 7-0 and was the first of freshmen Marvin Perez' career. Perez made a hesitation move to get past the defender at the top of the box on the right side, sniping to the top left side of the net.
Bridgewater outshot Southern Virginia 26-14, and only allowed one shot on goalkeeper Charles Schweinefuss.
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday Sept. 18, as they take on York at home. Action begins at 4:00 p.m.
