Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team had several good chances early and then late, but fell 6-0 to second place Washington & Lee at Jopson Field.
Courtney Cooke led a few dangerous counterattacks for BC in the opening period. She nearly broke free off the opening W&L corner of the game, with the Generals breaking up the rush. Cooke then got around the defense on the left side and W&L goalie Sara Amil had to dive forward and get a blocker hand on the ball to prevent the goal.
Bridgewater goalie Brooke Hamm (15 saves) made a pair of first quarter breakaway stops on Grace Weise, before the Generals opened the scoring late in the opening period. Tess Muneses cut inside and curled a shot into the upper corner from the outer part of the circle.
Hamm made several good first half saves on Peyton Tysinger, with one leading to a rebound that Freddie Tobeason slid over to Grace Amaden at the left post to double the General lead.
After a long Bridgewater clearance, Allison Thompson hustled the length of the field to pressure W&L by the endline and force a dangerous giveaway that was intercepted by Emmeline Mejia and nearly led to a shot for Karinne Moyer.
Washington & Lee added two goals each in the third and fourth quarters.
Bridgewater earned four penalty corners and got several great looks on goal over the final three minutes. Amil stopped attempts from Caroline Quigley, Thompson and Kelsey Hicks in the late flurry.
The Eagles are 3-4, 3-4 ODAC and will have two rescheduled games to finish the regular season- Thursday at EMU, and Sunday at home vs. Virginia Wesleyan.
