BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Roanoke College slipped past the Bridgewater College Eagles men's tennis team, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon on Mapp Courts. The contest was played as a non-conference match and will not count in the ODAC standings.
Bridgewater led 2-1 after the completion of doubles play with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots.
The Eagles' No. 1 duo - Canon Secord and Matthew Gordon - were first off the courts with an 8-3 victory over Jack Fishwick and Grayson White. The Eagles moved ahead 2-0 when Leyton Pullin and Bryce Cline stopped Thomas Hodges and Michael Morrell, 8-4, to take the point at No. 3 doubles.
Roanoke salvaged a key point when Dalton Capobianco and Zach Kriebel held off Nick Kiser and Gabe Elder, 8-5, to win the match at No. 2 doubles.
Secord gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead when he ousted Fishwick 6-1, 6-2 to win at No. 1, but the Maroons won four straight singles matches to clinch the victory.
Capobianco started the Roanoke comeback with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kiser at No. 3 singles. Hodges evened the team score at 3-3 when he defeated Pullin 6-2, 6-3 to claim the point at No. 5 singles. In a pivotal match at No. 2 singles, Roanoke's White outlasted Gordon in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to move the Maroons ahead in the match 4-3. Roanoke's Lance Beheler added the clinching point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cline at the No. 6 slot.
Bridgewater's final point came at No. 4 singles where Elder edged Kriebel in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
