HARRISONBURG, Va. - Bridgewater rallied from a 2-1 deficit Wednesday evening to defeat rival Eastern Mennonite, 3-2, in men's soccer action.
The victory was the first of the season for the Eagles, now 1-1-2 overall. The game against EMU was a non-conference game and will not count in the ODAC standings.
The Eagles scored first, getting on the board in the sixth minute on a goal by Matthew Shelor with the assist going to Alex Martinez.
Less than two minutes later, the Royals evened the score on a goal by JAmes Beachey. Eastern Mennonite took the lead in the 16th minute when Leiyan Kariuki scored to make it 2-1.
The Eagles tallied the equalizer in the 37th minute when Trevon Phillips scored to pull Bridgewater even at 2-2.
After the high-scoring first half, the game was still tied 2-2 entering the 77th minute. Bridgewater's Kalefa Boyar found the back of the net with 13:27 left on the clock to move the Eagles ahead 3-2.
EMU put one shot on frame in the final minutes, but Eagles' goalkeeper Tyler Deutsch made the save to help preserve the 3-2 victory.
Bridgewater held a 21-9 edge in total shots and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Deutsch finished the contest with three saaves.
The Eagles are back in action Sunday when they host Randolph College.
