Eagles Improve To 2-0 With A 5-2 Victory Over Knights

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College improved to 2-0 on the season with a solid 5-2 non-conference victory Thursday afternoon over Southern Virginia.

The Eagles took the lead early when Destiny Zapata found the net from the left side for her first collegiate goal giving Bridgewater a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game.

Zapata made it 2-0 in the 14th minute. Cyan Coates chased down a long pass down the right sideline and cut in front of a defender to take possession. Coates centered a pass from the right baseline and Zapata was free in front of the goal for an easy shot, making the score 2-0.

Bridgewater scored with just one second left in the first half to pad its lead. Angel Finch possessed the ball near the top of the box and took a left-footed shot while being pressured by a Knights' defender. The shot floated just out of reach of the Knights' keeper with just one tick left on the clock, giving the Eagles a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Eagles scored early in the second half when Skyler Daum's hard shot from the right side, glanced off the crossbar and into the side of the net, putting the Eagles on top 4-0.

After a goal by Makinna Winterton put the Knights on the board, the Eagles added their final goal on a set piece. Hanna Randolph took a corner kick for the Eagles and sent the ball toward the back post where Maddie Serttas was open. The Eagles' freshman headed the ball into the net for a 5-1 Bridgewater lead.

Hayley Reeves scored the Knight's final goal off a free kick from Casey Bergon for the final 5-2 margin.

Three goalkeepers shared time for the Eagles. Megan Byle played the first half and shut out the Knights to pick up her second career win. First-year keepers Charli Daum and Carlee Gaboury each made her college debut in the second half against the Knights.

The Eagles will return to action Sunday when they travel to Eastern Mennonite.
