Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College and Roanoke College battled to a scoreless tie Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer matchup.
For the second year in a row, the two programs played into overtime. A year ago, the Eagles escaped with a 1-0 victory, but Tuesday both defenses controlled play.
Scoring opportunities were few and far between for both sides. Roanoke held a 15-9 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Maroons' keeper Chris Martin made three saves on the day while Bridgewater keeper Sydney Davis finished with six saves.
The Eagles had a couple of good opportunities early but were unable to finish. Catherine Haufe got behind the Maroons defense and had a one-on-one with the keeper Martin on the right side, but elected to cross the ball instead of trying a shot. In the 12th minute, Sydney Ryan sent a cross into the box in front of the goal and teammate Angel Finch took the ball out of the air and directed a shot toward the goal, but Martin made a diving save to deny the Eagles.
Midway through the second overtime period, Morgan Todd floated a shot on frame from 25 yards out that had a chance, but Martin timed her jump perfectly and directed the ball over the crossbar for the save.
Bridgewater is back in action Saturday when the Eagles host Randolph-Macon to open conference play.
