Eagles Score Winning Goal In Second OT

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College scored the winning goal midway through the second overtime Wednesday to defeat Mary Baldwin 2-1 in non-conference men's soccer action.

Thunderstorm activity in the Valley delayed the start of the match for more than one hour with the contest eventually starting at 5:20 p.m. With darkness fast approaching, a Mary Baldwin goal kick was headed back into the offensive end by the Eagles. Thomas White received a pass just inside the box on the right side. He then siipped a pass across the box for Luke Stubbs and a wide-open Stubbs put the shot into the open net for the 2-1 Eagles victory.

The teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first half. Bridgewater took the lead early in the second half when Stephen Bishop stepped in front of a Mary Baldwin player and played a through ball ahead to White. White slipped his shot past the onrushing keeper to the far post and into the goal for a 1-0 Eagles' lead.

The Fighting Squirrels, now 2-2 on the season, evened the score in the 73rd minute when Dylan Sykes took advantage of an Eagles' turnover in the back line and beat Bridgewater keeper Colin Rouaud with a shot to the back post to tie the score at 1-1.

Bridgewater held a 24-18 advantage in total shots and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Mary Baldwin held the upper hand in corner kicks by a 10-4 margin.

Eagles' goalkeeper Rouaud finished the contest with three saves.

Bridgewater improves to 2-4 on the season and returns to action Saturday afternoon with a home date against Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays will enter the contest ranked No. 5 in the nation.
