Maroons edge Eagles, 5-4

SALEM, Va. - Roanoke took a 2-1 lead in doubles and then split the singles matches to edge Bridgewater College, 5-4, Wednesday in ODAC men's tennis action.

Roanoke took the first doubles point when Thomas Hodges and Michael Morell took an 8-3 victory over Nicholas Kiser and Robert Williard at the No. 3 position. Bridgewater evened the score when Canon Secord and Matthew Gordon defeated Grayson White and Matt Fishwick 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. The Maroons picked up a big point at No. 2 where Jack Doriss and Alston Martin edged Bridgewater's Freddie Roberts and Sonet Gandhi, 8-6.

Roanoke's Hodges claimed he first singles point when he stopped Gandhi 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 4 slot. Bridgewater evened the match at 3-3 with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Roberts rolled past Doriss 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles while Secord took a 6-0, 7-5 win over White at No. 1.

The Maroons scored the next two points to clinch the match. Fishwick defeated Gordon 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Morrell downed Bridgewater's Tyler Kolaskie 6-2, 6-1 for the winning point at No. 6.

Kiser added the final point for the Eagles with a split set 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Martin at No. 5 singles.
