BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team won its 2019 home opener, 18-10 over Birmingham-Southern on Thursday evening.

In his second collegiate start, senior goalie Hunter Bagby stopped 10 of 12 first half attempts and finished with 15 saves, including several point-blank denials.

Justin Calabrese (3g, 2a) and Eric Husselbaugh (2g, 3a) paced the attack with five points each. Sean MacLeish and Hunter Callan also had hat tricks for the Eagles.

Mason Gauntt went 4-for-4 on the first four faceoffs of the game, winning three ground balls in that span. He took the opening draw right down the field and fed MacLeish for the opener, just seven seconds into the action.

Bagby tipped a shot by Mason Benner off the post five minutes into the game, and then made another nice save after a drive by Davis Thompson.

The Eagles faced a 6-on-4 late in the opening period, and Bagby made a huge save on Taylor Carson to end the threat.

After a point-blank Bagby save to deny Carter McAlpin late in the first, Trent Cheyney assisted Lucas Johnson to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers pulled two back in the second quarter to halve the deficit before Jacob Clemmer stripped his man and broke the other way, leading to Jake Pangle's goal.

Thompson hit the crossbar for Birmingham-Southern in the final minute of the half, as BC went into the locker room with a 6-2 advantage.

Jared Barley's caused turnover led to a Callan goal 61 seconds into the third, and Chris Martel found Jake Truman for the long pole score right off the ensuing faceoff to make it 8-2 Eagles.

The Panthers again scored two unanswered, but the Eagles ran away with five goals in a span of two-and-a-half minutes- including man-up goals from Martel and Johnson.

The Eagles turned the ball over right in front of the cage early in the fourth quarter, but Bagby made great point-black stop on Peyton Taylor.

Bridgewater (2-0) will continue a stretch of five straight home games vs. SUNY-Delhi on March 2. Birmingham-Southern is 2-1 on the year.
