Eagles Stop Royals For Seventh Straight Win

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Bridgewater recovered after allowing an early goal Wednesday afternoon to defeat Eastern Mennonite, 2-1, in ODAC women's soccer action.

The victory, the seventh straight for Bridgewater, improves the Eagles' record to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Eastern Mennonite (2-4, 0-2 in the ODAC) jumped on top with a goal in the 26th minute. The Royals had a free kick from the left side and Shaylla Oswald sent a ball into the box. Bridgewater keeper Sydney Davis came off her line to defend the ball, but was unable to catch the ball cleanly. EMU's Rachel Souder possessed the loose ball and sent a shot behind the Eagles' goalie for the score and a 1-0 lead. The shot was the only attempt the Royals had in the first half.

Bridgewater had a chance to tie the score with 12 minutes left in the half with a strong opportunity off a corner kick. Hanna Randolph sent the kick into the box and Cyan Coates hit a strong header toward the far post, but the ball ricocheted off the post and back into the field of play.

The Eagles scored the equalizer with eight minutes left in the half. Janidy Madera possessed the ball along the right end line and centered a pass into the box where Emily York touched the ball past the keeper to even the score at 1-1.

The score remained tied until 60th minute when the Eagles took advantage of a set piece. Randolph sent the corner into the box where Coates was open on her run. EMU keeper Leah Wenger made the save on the Coates' shot but the ball rebounded back to Coates and this time she found the back of the net to put the Eagles on top 2-1.

Bridgewater held a 12-3 advantage in total shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. The Royals put all three of their shots on goal with Davis recording two saves. EMU's Wenger finished with four saves.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday when they travel to Lexington to play Washington and Lee in a matchup of two of the top teams in the South Atlantic Region. Bridgewater is ranked fourth in the United Soccer Coaches South Atlantic poll while W&L checks in at No. 7 in the region. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
