Box Score EMORY, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's soccer team suffered its second straight tough loss of the weekend at the Emory & Henry tournament as the Eagles fell to Southern Virginia, 1-0, Saturday evening.
The Eagles drop to 2-5 on the season and all five losses have been by one goal.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie. The Eagles controlled much of the play in the first half, holding a 5-2 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Knights scored the game's lone goal early in the second half. The Eagles turned the ball over near the top of the box and Southern Virginia's Anthony Bowden took advantage of the miscue, finding the back of the net with his shot for a 1-0 Knights lead at the 56:35 mark.
Following the goal, Bridgewater kept strong pressure on the Knights defense over the next 16 miuntes of play. The Eagles took five shots, putting two on goal, and had two corner kick chances but were unable to score the equalizer.
Southern Virginia's defense held the Eagles without a shot over the next 16 minutes, but the Eagles had two more opportunities late in the game. Bridgewater had two corner kick chances in the final two minutes, but each time the Knights defense was up to the task as Southern Virginia escaped with the 1-0 non-conference victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Colin Rouaud got the first start of his collegiate career and finished the day with two saves.
The Eagles finished with a slim 12-10 edge in shots and a big 9-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Bridgewater gets the week off before returning to action next Saturday when the Eagles open conference play at home against Hampden-Sydney. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
