Men's Tennis Defeats Lynchburg To Advance To ODAC Semifinals

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles swept doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead Tuesday afternoon and the Eagles went on to defeat Lynchburg College 5-0 in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC men's tennis tournament.

With the victory, the Eagles, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, advance to the semifinals Saturday at Randolph-Macon College where they will meet Guilford College. Guilford, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, defeated Randolph College 5-0 in quarterfinal action Tuesday.

The Eagles took the first doubles point when Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner blanked Juan Borga and Alex Ferraccio 8-0 in the No. 1 doubles matchup.

Bridgewater's Emmett Johnson and Dayton Carpenter pulled away late to take an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles over Dominick Gutierrez and Nick Savino.

Sonet Gandhi and Kris Stokes completed the sweep by holding off Lynchburg's Zach Shane and Bryce Barber 8-6 to take the victory at the No. 3 doubles slot.

The Eagles needed to win two singles matches to clinch the team victory. Johnson and Roberts came through with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to send the Eagles to the semifinal round.

Roberts was the first off the court in singles play. The Eagles' sophomore rolled to a 6-0 victory in the first set and then fought off Shane in the second set 6-4 to win the match.

Johnson clinched the victory for the Eagles with a straight set 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over Gutierrez

Bridgewater was missing several team members who violated College and team policies and did not play.
