Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan scored the winning goal early in the first overtime Wednesday as the Marlins edged Bridgewater College, 2-1, in a battle of teams tied for first place in the ODAC.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half. Virginia Wesleyan held a 5-3 edge in shots, but the Eagles' Bridget Fabiani had the lone shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
The Eagles were first on the scoreboard with a goal in the 64th minute. Bailey Kratz sent a pass into the box and Keri Rager volleyed the ball into the upper right corner for her 10th goal of the season.
The Marlins tied the score in the 71st minute when Mia Meinhardt scored off a rebound, making the score 1-1.
Rager had two shots down the stretch, but one was blocked and another missed wide. The Marlins put two shots on frame in the final 20 minutes, but Eagles' goalkeeper Hayley Talbott was in position to record the saves.
The Marlins scored the game-winner just four minutes into overtime when Zoe Traficante netted the goal off an assist from Meinhardt.
Bridgewater is now 12-3-1 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC while the Marlins improve to 10-5-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference.
The Eagles are back in action Saturday afternoon when they host Washington and Lee in the annual Cancer Awareness contest. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
