BRIDGEWATER, Va. – #16 Mary Washington scored four times off penalty corners and pulled away in the second half for a 7-2 win over the Bridgewater College field hockey team, Tuesday night at Jopson Field.

The start was the inverse of Bridgewater's last game, when the Eagles went right down to earn a corner and then scored for a quick 1-0 lead. UMW immediately earned a corner, Christine Loehr dribbled the ball into the area, and Lauren Hopkins finished off the cross at the back post.

Bridgewater followed with three early corners however, and scored on the final one. Sophomore Laura Gretz made a nice pass in to Elizabeth Washington, who tied the contest up at 1-1.

The play was end-to-end for a while as Shannon Strosser broke up a dangerous cross and the Eagles broke the other way, with Emily Matisons' pass just outside the reach of Jacqueline DiFulvio on a 2-on-1.

The Eagles scored the third penalty corner of the half to make it 2-1 in the 17th minute, on Allegra Massey-Elim's shot from outside.

Mary Washington grabbed another just before halftime. Lexie Dixson broke free on the right side and fired a shot under Bishop to give UMW the first two-goal advantage of the contest.

Dixson finished off her own rebound in the opening minutes of the second half to make it 4-1.

The goals then came fast, with the teams combining to score three times in just over two and a half minutes.

Dixson completed a hat trick in a span of 17:20 by forcing in a rebound. The Eagles scored at the other end as Madison Clement tapped in a ball off the goalline after Tessa Tierson had broken free down the left side and put a shot off the near post.

Massey-Elim made it 6-2 just over a minute later, roofing a shot following a penalty corner.

The visitors would add a seventh in the final two minutes on yet another penalty corner. Erin Kaila redirected Massey-Elim's pass back over to Hopkins who was open at the left post.

Freshmen Ali Bishop and Emily Witzke each made five saves in the cage for Bridgewater, who forced five total stops from two UMW goalies.

Bridgewater (2-3) was facing its seventh nationally-ranked opponent since the beginning of last season. Mary Washington, who was #12 in the first poll of the season, improves to 3-2 on the year.
