Eagles Score 11 Times in First Half to Open ODAC Title Defense

Box Score

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Bridgewater College field hockey team opened its ODAC title defense in style, scoring 11 times in the first half of a 13-0 conference win at Sweet Briar College.

Nine different Eagles scored goals, led by two goals and two assists from Elizabeth Washington. Senior Shannon Strosser and junior Casey Gaffney scored twice each, and senior Madison Clement added one goal and two assists. Freshman Emily Matisons also had two helpers.

Playing against their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent since a 1-0 win at Washington & Lee last November in the championship game, the Eagles took just 74 seconds to get on the board.

Washington was saved by Sweet Briar goalie Emily Dodson on the contest' first shot, but finished off a Clement pass soon after to open the scoring.

Strosser made it 2-0, and Washington added a goal and an assist to Gaffney to double that scoreline within the opening seven and a half minutes.

Washington's second goal was assisted by Tierson, who then scored off an assist from Jacqueline DiFulvio in the 11th minute.

Tierson hit the post on BC's next possession, before Marisa Sims scored two minutes later to make it 6-0.

Three Eagle rookies then scored their first collegiate goals in succession- DiFulvio, Alexandra Rose and Georgia Howard (on a penalty stroke).

Clement and Strosser struck in the final two minutes of the half to make it 11-0 at the break.

Gaffney scored the first goal of the second half, and Matisons assisted Clement for Bridgewater's final tally of the game.

Freshmen Ali Bishop and Emily Witzke split the game in the cage, with neither seeing a shot on target.

This year's schedule features more ODAC contests early in the schedule, including this season opener against a Vixens team that was returning to the league after a one-year hiatus.

Bridgewater (1-0, 1-0) travels to Washington & Jefferson on Sunday before heading to Lynchburg for another ODAC contest on Sept. 8.
