Generals Outhit Eagles In 13-8 Victory

LEXINGTON, Va
. - Washington and Lee scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday afternoon to snap an 8-8 tie and defeat Bridgewater College 13-8 in ODAC baseball action.

With the loss, the Eagles are now 10-8 in conference play. Bridgewater needs to come away with at least a split of Saturday's doubleheader with Roanoke to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.

Bridgewater held early leads of 3-2, 5-3 and 6-3 but the Eagles were unable to put the Generals away.

W&L took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles scored three times in the top of the second to take the upper hand.

The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the second on a single by Brendan Howell, a walk to Justin Petock and a single by Damian Reed. Howell scored on a groundout by Hunter Hensley and a two-run double by Austin Batten gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

The Generals tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second, but Bridgewater regained the lead with two runs in the fourth and then added another run in the fifth to lead 6-3.

Reed and Hensley singled to lead off the fourth and both advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Horne. Both runners scored when Batten's hard grounder to first was booted for an error as the Eagles moved ahead 5-3.

In the fifth, Kenner Berry doubled and scored on a two-out double by Petock, givng Bridgeater a three-run cushion.

W&L erased the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Weston and Scott Simmons produced run scoring singles to pull the Generals to within 6-5 and an infield error allowed the tying run to score.

W&L put single runs on the board in the sixth and seventh to take an 8-6 lead. Matt Wasson led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to put the Generals ahead 7-6. In the seventh, Austin Crane singled and scored on a triple by Cory Paton, making the score 8-6.

The Eagles tied the score in the eighth. With one out in the eighth, Hensley and Horne singled and the Generals went to the bullpen for their closer, Danny Devereux. Devereux struck out Batten for out number two, but Cavin Clyde doubled to the gap in left-center, scoring both Hensley and Horne to tie the score at 8-8.

The Generals put the game away with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth. Chadwick Feeley gave W&L the lead with a run-scoring double and a two-run single by Paton made the score 11-8. Wasson chased home a run with a single to right and a second run scored on the play when the ball was misplayed for an error, giving the hosts a 13-8 lead.

Bridgewater, now 20-16 overall, celebrates Senior Day when it hosts Roanoke on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon.
