Eagles Shut Out No. 9 Shenandoah, 3-0

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. – Bridgewater College pushed across three runs in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday to defeat No. 9 Shenandoah University, 3-0, in ODAC baseball action played at Bridgeforth Field.

Bridgewater lefty Ryan Leake and Hornets' starter Colin Morse dominated from the mound in a classic pitcher's duel.

Morse allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings. He struck out 10 batters and walked just three. Leake gave up just four hits in eight innings of work. The Eagles' southpaw walked four batters and struck out one.

Bridgewater (13-8, 4-3 in the ODAC) put two runners on against Morse in the seventh, but could not push across a run. With two outs, Garrison Wright walked and Damian Reed followed with a single up the middle. Morse stranded both runners when he retired Brandon Poole on a grounder to second to end the inning.

The Eagles threatened again in the eighth against Hornets reliever Ryan Mossman. Hunter Hensley got the inning started by bunting down the third base line for a base hit. Hensley moved to second on the play when the throw to first was wide of the bag. Austin Batten then put down a sacrifice bunt to move Hensley to third and Batten was safe on the play when Mossman failed to field the bunt cleanly.

Mossman, however, was able to work out of the first-and-third, no outs jam. The Hornets righthander struck out Cavin Clyde on a fastball away for the first out. Leake then followed by hitting a liner to the right side. Shenandoah second baseman Tristan Baker timed his leap perfectly and snagged the liner for the second out of the inning. Baker threw to first to retire Batten to complete the double play, keeping the contest scoreless.

Shenandoah (13-5, 3-3 in the ODAC) advanced a runner as far as third base just once the entire game and that came in the bottom of the eighth. Joe Coleman led off the inning with an infield single and took second on Baker's sacrifice bunt. Coleman moved to third on a groundout before the Eagles intentionally walked Abel Arocho to put runners at the corners. Dan Cameron hit a grounder up the middle, but Batten made a nice back-handed play and threw to first in time to retire Cameron for the third out of the inning.

The Eagles pushed across the game's only runs in the ninth with the aid of a two Shenandoah errors. With one out, Brendan Howell reached first on an infield error. Wright moved Howell to second with a sacrifice bunt and pinch-hitter Chris King was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Phil Morse was summoned from the Shenandoah bullpen to face Poole. Poole hit a slow roller between home plate and the mound that was fielded by the Hornets' pitcher. Morse's throw to first, however, sailed high and rolled down the right-field line, allowing both Howell and King to score for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead. Hensley then plated Poole with a single, making the score 3-0.

Steven Woerner went to the mound for the Eagles in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side in order for his fourth save of the season.

The victory was Bridgewater's second of the season against a team ranked in D3Baseball.com's Top 10. Earlier this season, the Eagles defeated Randolph-Macon, ranked No. 9 at the time and ranked No. 6 in the most recent poll. Bridgewater has four wins against teams ranked in this week's Top 25 - Randolph-Macon, Shenandoah and two against No. 25 Concordia-Chicago.

The Eagles will have another opportunity to notch a victory against a ranked foe when No. 14 Christopher Newport visits Bridgewater on Thursday afternoon. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
