LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee scored two second-half goals Wednesday to defeat Bridgewater College, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC men's soccer tournament.
The loss ends the season for the Eagles as they conclude the 2016 season with a 9-8-2 record.
Just four days after losing to W&L 4-0 in the regular season finale, the Eagles played the nationally-ranked Generals to a 0-0 draw in the opening half. W&L held an 8-4 edge in shots and an 8-2 margin in corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes, but the Eagles' defense and keeper Mark Davis were solid against the Generals' pressure.
Bridgewater had an opportunity to take the lead in the 29th minute when defender Jacob Heiston worked forward and got off a shot from inside the box. W&L keeper Gillen Beck made a diving save to deny the shot that was on line to sneak inside the post.
W&L broke the scoreless tie with an early second-half goal. Will Hamryka crossed a pass into the middle of the box and Geinda Smith headed his shot into the top right corner for a 1-0 W&L lead in the 49th minute.
The Eagles kept the margin at one goal until the Generals put the game away with a goal in the 87th minute. W&L answered an Eagles' offensive flurry with a quick counter-attack that led to a breakaway. Reeves Duggan pushed the ball ahead to Tyler Runge and Runge was able to beat Davis one-on-one with a low shot into the right corner of the goal, giving the 15th-ranked Generals a 2-0 lead.
W&L held a 20-9 edge in total shots and 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Davis finished the contest with six saves while Beck countered with five saves for the Generals.
