W&L Blanks Eagles, 4-0

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Washington and Lee scored a goal in the third minute Saturday afternoon and never looked back as the Generals blanked Bridgewater College 4-0 in the regular season finale for both squads.

Saturday was Senior Day at Bridgewater and the Eagles recognized seniors Mark Davis, Max Chacon and Jose Rodriguez at halftime.

W&L (13-3-1, 7-1-1), scored first when a ball bounced off an Eagles defender near the top of the box where Generals' midfielder Kevin Molnar played the rebound and put a shot into the back of the net from 20 yards out.

The score remained 1-0 until W&L scored off a set piece in the 37th minute. David Cohen took the corner kick for the Generals and sent the ball toward the back post. James Brady headed the ball down and just inside the post to give the Generals a 2-0 lead.

Bridgewater had its best opportunity late in the first half. After a Bridgewater throw-in, a bad touch by a Generals' defender left the ball on the foot of Eagles's midfielder Thomas White. White's shot to the far post beat W&L keeper Gillen Beck, but the shot bounced off the post and rolled harmlessly across the box.

The visitors countered after White's near miss and scored again in the closing seconds of the half. Sterling Kirk passed the ball to his left and Will Hamryka put his shot to the far post, just out of the reach of keeper Davis, making the score 3-0 with just eight seconds left in the first half.

W&L scored its final goal early in the second half. Geinda Smith touched a ball into the box and Kevin Lencioni slotted his shot just inside the near post for the Generals fourth goal of the game.

Bridgewater just missed another scoring opportunity following W&L's fourth goal. The Generals were whistled for a foul on the left side, 10 yards outside the box. Bridgewater's Rodriguez took the free kick and his shot caromed off the near post and back into play.

The Generals held a 21-9 advantage in shots and a 9-5 margin in corner kicks.

Davis, playing his final game on the BC Soccer Field, finished with seven saves.

The Eagles finish the regular season with a 9-7-2 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the conference.

Bridgewater will return to action Wednesday for a first-round contest in the ODAC tournament. Seeds, pairings and game times will be announced later this weekend.
