BUENA VISTA, Va. - Senior forward Julia Baca scored all of Bridgewater's goals Tuesday evening as the Eagles opened their season with a 4-1 road victory over Southern Virginia University.
Baca scored two goals in each half to lead the Eagles to the win.
The Eagles senior put her team on top early when she got behind the Knights defense to score on a breakaway less than three minutes into the game.
Baca made it 2-0 with another breakaway in the 32nd minutes to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage at the break.
The Knights had an opportunity to cut into the lead early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick. Bridgewater keeper Hayley Talbott made a diving save to her left to keep the host team off the scoreboard.
Baca scored her third goal at the 60:18 mark. First-year player Bailey Kratz served a ball into the box and Baca punched the ball past the keeper from close range, making the score 3-0.
The Bridgewater senior scored her final goal 11 minutes later when she took a perfect pass from freshman Isabella Krider and drilled a shot from 15 yards out, just under the crossbar, for a 4-0 Eagles lead.
Southern Virginia avoided the shutout when Mckenzie Cottle put a shot from 25 yards away on the left side just inside the far post with 12 minutes left in the contest.
The Eagles held a substantial 25-6 margin in shots attempted, including an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Bridgewater also held a 6-1 edge on corner kicks.
Bridgewater returns to action this weekend when it travels to Maryville College for a pair of games. The Eagles play the host Maryville Scots on Saturday and then meet Piedmont College on Sunday afternoon.
