BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In a rematch of the 2014 ODAC championship game, the Bridgewater College field hockey team lost a wild 6-3 contest at home vs. #10 Lynchburg College.
The Eagles struck twice in under two minutes to take a lead midway through the first half, and were controlling the early part of the second half before a late run of goals.
With 15:02 left in the first half, senior Alenka Ferrufino made a nice move around a defender and fed classmate Taylor Prillaman at the right post to tie the game at 1-1.
The Eagles immediately won a penalty corner on the restart. Prillaman passed to Caroline Fletcher, who hit a well-placed low shot inside the left corner for an Eagle lead.
It didn't last long, as Lynchburg answered a minute and a half later following a penalty corner. Morgan Lammando hit the post, and Karissa LeMaire finished off the rebound to even things up at 2-2.
Prillaman finished with two goals and an assist for Bridgewater. BC's points all came from seniors for a second straight game, with that class now having accounted for 23 points over the past two contests.
Trailing 3-2, Bridgewater had sustained pressure for most of the second half but couldn't get a good shot on goal as Lynchburg's defense held on. The Hornets also survived two shorthanded situations while clinging to a one-goal lead, in a second half that featured four cards overall.
Senior Allison Kirk made a nice move to get herself wide open from the left side, but couldn't get enough on the shot. Bridgewater freshman defender Laura Gretz cut out a dangerous 4-on-2 after Bridgewater was whistled on a penalty corner and the visitors broke the other way.
Lynchburg finally grabbed some breathing room with just over 10 minutes to play, as Nikki Simpao deflected a high pass to Kayla Copeman for a 4-2 scoreline.
Prillaman appeared to score soon after, but her hard slap shot from outside hit the netting and was ruled no goal.
Prillaman would get another in a frantic final four minutes that also included Lynchburg goals from Simpao and Sydney Rampey.
BC freshman goalie Hannah Rioux (six saves) made several good plays in the early going, including a double stop on Catherine Rogerson five minutes in. She later made a blocker save on Alyssa Mills with the score still 1-0 LC.
Simpao was the difference-maker on counterattacks in the first half, setting up two goals. The first she finished off herself after feeding Lacey Elliott out wide and making a run in front of the cage. She then started a break that Mallory Henderson finished off from Elliott for a 3-2 halftime lead.
Simpao finished with two goals and an assist, while Elliott had two helpers.
Bridgewater (3-7, 1-1) was playing its third nationally-ranked opponent of the season. Lynchburg, #10 in the polls for a second straight week, sits at 9-1, 2-1 ODAC.
