Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington & Lee defense was able to smother Bridgewater's attack and make a single goal hold up, as the Eagles field hockey team lost 1-0 on Saturday in Lexington.
With an ODAC playoff bye on the line, the Generals managed just seven total shots and one penalty corner over 70 minutes, but held Bridgewater to one corner and five shot attempts (one on target).
Maggie Waxter gave the hosts the lead early in the second half, stuffing the rebound home through Marisa Sims' pads after Sims had saved Waxter's first attempt.
That came off a 38th-minute penalty corner- the first corner of the entire contest after a tight first half.
Senior Caroline Fletcher kept the Eagles close with 20 minutes to go, making a defensive save on Charlotte MacDonald. A Waxter follow-up attempt was blocked.
Bridgewater earned their lone penalty corner in the final 10 minutes, but a Rachael Loy shot was blocked.
The early part of the game was a midfield battle, with a Marisa Sims save on Waxter representing the only shot of the opening 17 minutes.
Elizabeth Washington saw a promising chance saved in the 18th minute, and then Taylor Prillaman put a shot wide soon afterwards.
Bridgewater (9-8, 5-2 ODAC) will be the #3 seed in the upcoming ODAC playoffs and host a quarterfinal game vs. Virginia Wesleyan. Washington & Lee (10-6, 6-1) earns a bye and the right to host the semifinal and final rounds next weekend.
