BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Alenka Ferrufino scored the game-winner with 6:21 remaining, as the Bridgewater College field hockey team won an exciting 2-1 home matchup with Shenandoah.
The Eagles won a penalty corner and Ferrufino deflected a hard pass from classmate Taylor Prillaman into the cage to put Bridgewater into a tie for first place in the ODAC.
BC had taken a 1-0 lead into halftime after Rachael Loy slipped an outside shot through a crowd with 8:06 remaining in the period.
Shenandoah had earned the game's first penalty corner within the final minute of the first half, with Bridgewater defender Sarah Rozelle clearing a Kelani Bailey attempt away- the first SU shot on target of the match.
Shenandoah began to grab a foothold in the game in the second half, but couldn't defeat replacement goalkeeper Marisa Sims. Sims, a forward making her second start in the cage due to injury, made five second half saves and improved to 2-0.
Sims denied both Sarah Brock and Alana Meadows on a penalty corner early in the second half. She later blocked down Bailey's shot following another corner, but Elizabeth Pardo was waiting to knock the rebound in and tie things up at 1-1.
Prillaman nearly caught SU goalie Jessica Brown out of position on a restart but Brown got back to tip the shot around the post. After Ferrufino's go-ahead goal, Prillaman was tripped up from behind on a breakaway but the call was only for a penalty corner, not a stroke.
In the first half, Shenandoah defender Alexa Lapp had cleared away no less than three dangerous crosses from the right side with Allison Kirk bearing down.
After Prillaman couldn't jam home the game's first opportunity, Ferrufino sent a cross towards an open Kirk that was knocked away by Lapp. Midway through the half, she did the same on an Elizabeth Washington pass headed towards Kirk at the back post. Prillaman followed with another hard cross from the right wing that was again dealt with by Lapp at the doorstep.
Bridgewater has now won six straight games against Shenandoah, but this was the first in that stretch to end in regulation.
The Eagles improve to 9-7, 5-1 and are tied with Washington & Lee for first place in the ODAC standings. Lynchburg is at 4-1 with a game tomorrow night vs. Eastern Mennonite. Shenandoah falls to 10-6, 5-2.
Bridgewater will conclude its regular season Saturday at W&L, with the Eagles looking to clinch a first round bye with a victory.
