BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College Eagles won their first ODAC contest of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over rival Eastern Mennonite.
Bridgewater (4-7-1, 1-5 in the ODAC) controlled play from the opening whistle, keeping constant pressure on the Royals defense.
Bridgewater's Ben Lewis had a 1-on-1 opportunity with EMU keeper Daniel Nyce in the fourth minute, but his shot from 15 yards out missed wide left.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard at the 16:05 mark of the opening half. Following an EMU foul, Bridgewater's Derek Newsome had a free kick from just beyond the midfield stripe. Newsome sent the ball into the box where Connor Henderson was making a run on the far side. Henderson headed the ball into the net, just inside the post for a 1-0 Eagles lead. The goal was Henderson's third of the season and the assist was the second of the season for Newsome.
Bridgewater scored again nine minutes later to take a two-goal lead. Bridgewater midfielder Austin White gained possession of the ball 30 yards out and lofted a shot over the head of Nyce for his second goal of the season to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Eastern Mennonite (3-9-2, 1-3-2 in the ODAC) opened the second half with aggressive play in the offensive end, but a shot from Jonathan Bush sailed high while Juan Luna's attempt from the top of the box was stopped by Eagles keeper Mark Davis.
The Eagles then extended their lead with a goal in the 54th minute. The Royals misplayed the ball near midfield with Bridgewater's Renato Grgic gaining possession. With space ahead, Grgic dribbled toward the top of the box and slipped a pass to his right to Adam Weisenborn for a shot that resulted in Bridgewater's third goal of the game. The goal was the first of the season for Weisenborn while the assist was the third this year for Grgic.
Bridgewater found the back of the net two more times in the second half, but each time the Eagles were whistled for being offside.
The Eagles held a 17-10 edge in shots while EMU had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Davis finished the contest with three saves for the Eagles while Nyce stopped three shots for EMU,
