BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater responded to an early Southern Virginia score with three goals before the halftime break and the Eagles went on to defeat the Knights, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action.
The Knights stunned the Eagles with an early goal when Bridgewater was unable to clear a corner kick. Southern Virginia's Jamilla Gambee booted a shot past Bridgewater keeper Krista Kelly from 12 yards out for an early 1-0 Knights lead.
Bridgewater immediately picked up the pressure and evened the score in the next minute. Anna Theisen whistled a shot toward goal that Knights' keeper MaKenzie Cox was able to get a hand on and deflect. Eagles' freshman Keri Rager was there to clean up the rebound and her shot tied the score at one goal apiece. The goal was the first career goal for Rager.
Bridgewater grabbed the lead in the 17th minute and never looked back. The Eagles maintained pressure at the offensive end and created another strong scoring opportunity. Julia Baca served a pass into the box off a free kick and Nikole Blackwell headed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season and a 2-1 Eagles lead.
Baca made it 3-1 in the 33rd minute when she possessed a crossing pass from Amber O'Connor and beat the keeper with a shot to the far post. The goal was the sixth of the season for Baca.
Bridgewater finished the contest with a 26-7 edge in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.
Kelly and Hayley Talbott combined to limit the Knights to just the single goal. Kelly had one first-half save and Talbott turned away two shots during the final 45 minutes of play.
Bridgewater is now 5-2 overall while the Knights drop to 1-4-2 on the season.
The Eagles return to conference action Saturday when they travel to play the Roanoke Maroons. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
