BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Junior midfielder Ricky Capuano scored the winning goal early in the first overtime Saturday afternoon to lift Bridgewater College to a 3-2 victory over Randolph-Macon College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both squads.
The victory snapped Bridgewater's five-game losing streak to start the 2014 season.
Capuano gained possession of the ball near midfield and carried the ball toward the top of the box. The junior stopped about 25 yards out and ripped a shot that went just above the outstretched arm of Yellow Jackets C.J. Montalbano and just under the cross bar, sending the Eagles to their first win of the season.
The Eagles struck first, taking the lead in the fourth minute of play. Ben Lewis took possession of the ball on the right side and floated a crossing pass across the box. Eagles' freshman Connor Henderson booted the ball off the bounce past the Macon keeper for a quick 1-0 lead.
The advantage didn't last long as the Yellow Jackets scored the equalizer in the eighth minute. Sam Bowen pushed a pass downfield and teammate Tyler Slayton was first to the ball. Slayton lofted a shot up and over Eagles keeper Kevin Morris from just past the top of the box to tie the contest at one goal apiece.
The scored remained tied until the 83rd minute when the Eagles regained the lead. Lewis hit a shot from deep that was blocked by a defender. Jake Spiegel got a touch on the rebound and Max Chacon blasted a shot past the keeper for a 2-1 Bridgewater advantage.
The Yellow Jackets immediately turned up the pressure at their offensive end and tied the game less than two minutes later. Bowen again had the assist as his pass found a wide open Andrew Oakes for the tying goal.
Randolph-Macon held a 23-18 edge in shots, including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.
Morris finished the contest with eight saves while Macon keeper Montalbano recorded three saves.
The Eagles are now 1-5 overall and 1-0 in the ODAC while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Bridgewater returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Westminster, Md., for a non-conference contest against McDaniel.
