BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team had numerous opportunities against the 18th-ranked Eagles of Mary Washington but the host Eagles couldn't capitalize on their chances as Mary Washington defeated the Eagles by a 3-0 tally in Wednesday evening's home opener at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
Out of the gate it was Mary Washington going on the attack at the offensive end. The Eagles fired three shots at the cage but Bridgewater freshman netminder Amanda Harper was up to the task each time as she held the contest at a scoreless deadlock in the game's opening minutes.
Bridgewater responded with a barrage of its own. At the 6:57 mark of the first half, junior Taylor Prillaman ripped a shot at the Mary Washington cage and goalie Megan McLaughlin turned the shot away before junior Alenka Ferrufino fired a shot at the cage and Carlee Budd pushed it off the line at the last moment to keep the game scoreless.
The Eagles remained on the attack with two more shots on goal before the visiting Eagles went back into the attack zone. At the 20:28 mark, Kathleen Namey fired a shot at Harper and the freshman turned it away but Haley Kane was there to clean up the rebound to put Mary Washington out in front by a 1-0 tally.
Budd added an insurance goal for Mary Washington later in the half as the Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the locker room of a tightly-played first half.
Despite the two-goal discrepancy, the Eagles held close with Mary Washington in the opening half with UMW owning a slim 12-7 edge in shots.
Early in the second half, Jenna Steele added the game's final tally on a breakaway to send Mary Washington home with a 3-0 victory.
Bridgewater was led by a seven-shot effort on the evening from Prillaman as the Eagles were outshot by a 20-14 margin.
