BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team fought off a strong challenge from Roanoke College to take a 6-3 victory Monday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action played at the Mapp Tennis Facility.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead by taking two of the three doubles matches.
Bridgewater's Brandon Larsen and Thomas Rishcoff were first off the court as the duo blanked Roanoke's Matt Kessler and Chris Migliarese, 8-0. The Eagles' No. 3 team of Sam Churchill and Drew Hubble followed with an 8-3 victory over Lewis Young and Chris Teeple.
Roanoke picked up its point at No. 1 where Jacob Morris and Joey Ross outlasted Christian Lynn and Mike Cable, 9-7.
Rishcoff was the first singles match off the court as the Bridgewater freshman blanked Young 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Migliarese edged Churchill 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles to keep the Maroons within a point.
Bridgewater's Kyle Hartfield rallied from one set down to turn back Kessler 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to push the Eagles to within one point of the team victory. Cable clinched the match for the Eagles when he defeated Teeple in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The final two matches on the court went the distance. Lynn and Morris played three sets at No. 3 with Lynn emerging with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory. At the No. 1 singles flight, Roanoke's Ross stopped Larson in a marathon three set match, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
With the victory, the Eagles improved to 11-8 overall and 7-2 in conference play. Bridgewater closes out the regular season Wednesday with a key match at Randolph-Macon. Both teams will enter the contest with 7-2 ODAC records.
