Eagles Fall to Lynchburg in Title Game, 2-0

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The top-seeded Lynchburg Hornets netted two first half goals and held the second-seeded Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team off of the scoreboard in the second half as the Hornets claimed their ninth straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title with a 2-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

Lynchburg struck first after both teams had early opportunities. At the 14:51 mark of the first frame, Kelsey Link tapped in a pass from Taylor Quillen and beat Bridgewater netminder Amanda Harper to put the Hornets out in front, 1-0.

Following the Lynchburg tally, Bridgewater went on the attack. Freshman Elizabeth Washington and junior Caroline Fletcher each ripped shots on frame, but Hornets goalie Beka Hess was up the task, thwarting both scoring attempt to maintain a 1-0 Lynchburg advantage.

After the Bridgewater barrage, the Hornets added an insurance tally. Lacey Elliott came free in front of the net and dribbled a shot past Harper and into the back of the cage to extend the Lynchburg lead to 2-0.

Both teams had chances down the stretch run of the first half, but it was Lynchburg taking a 2-0 lead to the intermission.

Bridgewater outshot Lynchburg by a slim 7-6 tally in a back-and-forth first half of play.

Out of the intermission, Bridgewater earned an early penalty corner but Washington's shot was blocked by the Lynchburg defense to hold the Hornets advantage at two.

The two teams continued to switch sides of the field and the Eagles fired two more shots on frame but Hess turned away both opportunities as the Hornets held on to a 2-0 lead with less than 17 minutes to play.

Over the final 17 minutes of the game, both teams had limited chances as the Hornets rolled to a 2-0 win.

Bridgewater was led offensively by a four-shot outing from Washington as the Eagles outshot Lynchburg by a 14-11 margin.

Harper picked up the loss after turning away six shots on the day. The freshman wraps up her first season with the Eagles with the single-season goals against average record with a 1.82 GAA.

Lynchburg was led by goals from Link and Elliott while Hess made six saves to secure her 15th win of the season.

Taylor Prillaman, Rachael Loy and Kaitlyn Harris were each named to the all-tournament team after helping to lead the Eagles to their first-ever ODAC championship appearance. Prillaman wraps up the season with 15 goals which ties her own career-high mark and is the highest total for a Bridgewater player since Holly Ware's 16-goal effort in 1999.

Bridgewater wraps up the season with a 12-8 overall record, marking the program's second-straight, 12-win season. The program's 12 wins also gives it double digits wins for the third straight season which is a new program record for consecutive 10-win seasons.
