Shenandoah Stuns Eagles In ODAC Women's Soccer Quarterfinals

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater's record-breaking season came to an abrupt halt Saturday afternoon as Shenandoah University stunned the Eagles 4-0 in the opening round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer tournament.

The Hornets took the lead early when Danielle Burris hit a shot with her left foot from the left side and put the ball top shelf near the far post for a 1-0 Shenandoah lead just 8:15 into the game.

The Eagles put plenty of pressure on the Hornets defense following the Burris goal, but were unable to finish opportunities.

In the 17th minute, Bridgewater was awarded a corner kick and the Eagles caught the Shenandoah defense before they could organized by putting the ball in play quickly. Michelle Viegas put the ball into the box where Nikole Blackwell took the shot. The shot appeared to be headed for the back of the net, but a Hornets defender cleared the ball off the goal  line to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.

Bridgewater threatened again in the 25th minute when Viegas blasted a shot from the 18 that hit the bottom of the crossbar. The Eagles celebrated, thinking the ball had landed beyond the goal line when it hit the ground. The goal was not awarded and the Hornets maintained the 1-0 lead.

Shenandoah added its second goal late in the half when another long shot from Burris slid past Eagles goalkeeper Krista Kelly, making the score 2-0.

Things didn't get any better for the Eagles following the halftime break.

The Hornets took advantage of a misplayed ball by the Eagles back line to score again. Catherine Major scored the goal for Shenandoah in the 48th minute to make the score 3-0.

Bridgewater missed on another scoring chance when Julia Baca missed wide on a breakaway as the Eagles offense continued to misfire.

The Hornets added their final goal off a free kick. Burris took the kick from the left side and lofted a high ball into the box. Averi Rosena converted the goal for the final 4-0 margin of victory.

Bridgewater held a 15-10 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Ashley Crossman led the Eagles with four shots and Viegas took three shots.

Shenandoah keeper Erin Septer was strong in goal throughout the contest and finished with seven saves. Kelly had two saves and Hayley Talbott added one save for the Eagles.

Bridgewater finishes the season with a 16-4 record. Shenandoah advances to the tournament semifinal round and will play at Washington and Lee on Wednesday.
