Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee gained the upper hand with a first-half penalty kick and the Generals led the rest of the way for a 2-0 victory over Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer action.
The teams were locked in a scoreless duel for the first 28 minutes, but then a hard tackle in the box by the Eagles resulted in a penalty kick for the Generals. W&L's Zach Colby stroked the PK into the lower left corner of the goal, just beyond the reach of Bridgewater keeper Kevin Morris, to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles had a good opportunity late in the half to tie the score, but an offside call negated a Bridgewater goal and the Generals went to the half with the 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 70th minute when the Generals scored an important insurance goal. Morris came out of goal in an effort to secure a loose ball in the box. The ball, however, deflected off the Eagles' keeper, and W&L's Andrew Kim booted the ball into the open net for a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles had an opportunity in the 78th minute when they were awarded a free kick from straight ahead, just outside of the box. Bridgewater freshman Cole Georges hit the shot, but W&L keeper Albert Civitarese made a leaping save and punched the ball out of the box to preserve the shutout.
The Generals held a 19-5 edge in shots and took twice as many corners kicks with an 8-4 advantage.
Bridgewater's Morris finished the contest with eight saves while W&L's Civitarese turned away four shots. Connor Henderson put two shots on goal for the Eagles while Georges and Adrian Zamora each had one shot on goal.
With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference. W&L improved to 7-2, 3-2 in conference play.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday afternoon when the Eagles host Shenandoah in an ODAC contest.
