BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with one of its best efforts of the season as the Eagles picked up a big 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over the Guilford Quakers.
The Eagles are now 6-11 overall and 5-5 in ODAC play. The victory puts the Eagles in a better position to earn a spot in the conference tournament with one game left in the regular season. Bridgewater closes out its regular season Tuesday night when it makes the short trip to Harrisonburg to play rival Eastern Mennonite.
Bridgewater got on the board in the 19th minute by taking advantage of a corner kick opportunity. Cole Georges put the kick into the box where Ben Lewis finished with the goal for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
The Eagles struck again four minutes later. Lewis got free on a breakaway down the left side. He delivered a pass across the box and Alex Farrington booted the ball into the open goal for a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.
Bridgewater added its third goal early in the second half off a direct kick. Georges took the kick from the right side, just outside of the box. Lewis was able to get a touch on the ball and sent it past the keeper, just inside the far post, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles kept the pressure on the Quakers defense and just missed on two more scoring chances. Less than a minute after Lewis' second goal, Connor Henderson got free on a breakaway for the Eagles. Henderson chipped his shot over the head of Guilford's onrushing keeper and the shot appeared destined for the back of the net, but a Quakers defender made a diving save and cleared the ball off the goal line. Bridgewater had another chance on the ensuing corner kick but Ethan McBryde's shot ricocheted off the far post keeping the Eagles' advantage at three goals.
Guilford avoided the shutout when Izzy Betancourt scored from 15 yards out with just 12 seconds left in the game.
Bridgewater controlled play with a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Lewis led the Eagles with four shots, including three shots on goal.
Kevin Morris picked up the victory in goal for the Eagles and finished the contest with three saves. Guilford keeper Marco Mandalinic recorded eight saves on the day.
