BRIDGEAWTER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles ran their winning streak to nine in a row with an impressive 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon over Virginia Wesleyan in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer action.
The Eagles' victory sets up a showdown for second place in the conference Wednesday afternoon in Lexington, Va., against Washington and Lee. Both teams will enter Wednesday's contest with 8-1 conference records.
Bridgewater, now 13-2 overall, recorded its eighth consecutive shutout with Saturday's win. The Eagles have not allowed a goal in the past 800 minutes of play. The 13 wins ties the program record for most victories in a season.
The Eagles got on the board early against the Marlins when Michelle Viegas sent a pass to the top of the box where Julia Baca stroked the shot past Marlins goalkeeper Megan Gerhart for a 1-0 lead just 8:38 into the game. The goal was Baca's 15th of the season and the assist was the ninth for Viegas.
The contest then settled into a defensive battle for the remainder of the half. The Eagles had an opportunity in the final two minutes of the half when Paxton Sauerwald got past the Marlins defense for a one-on-one chance but Gerhart made a diving save on the shot to keep the score at 1-0.
The Eagles tallied early in the second half to pad the lead. Ashley Crossman sent a pass from the right side into the box and Keri Rager was able to get just enough of a touch on the ball to send it across the goal line to put the Eagles on top 2-0 at the 53:19 mark. The goal was Rager's sixth this season.
Bridgewater put the game away in the 65th minute. Sauerwald put a shot on goal that was saved by Gerhart. The ball rebounded to Grayson Mathews and the Eagles freshman put her shot into the net for her first career goal and a 3-0 Bridgewater lead.
The Eagles finished the contest with a 17-8 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Krista Kelly recorded her sixth shutout of the season and finished the contest with five saves. Gerhart registered seven saves for the Marlins.
